The Polished Opal

The workshop starts with a short talk about opals with examples to look at and handle. Then you get to choose a parcel of three opals per person, ranging in size from six-twelve carats. You then learn how to polish them and release the gorgeous fire within the stones, which takes approximately two hours for all three stones.

This gives people the unique experience of polishing genuine Australian opal. There is nowhere else where you can polish opals and it is very likely that the opals you leave with will be worth more than the money you spent on this workshop. In fact, potentially you could polish an opal that is worth hundreds of dollars as it is impossible to see what an opal will look like before it's been polished, truly the luck of the draw.

But this workshop gives you the information to help you make an informed choice of the parcel of opals you'll choose. When the opals have been polished, they are placed in a small display case for you to take home or, alternatively, they can be set in a piece of jewellery either on site or by your own jeweller back home.

Spanish Souvenirs

The enchanting combination of flute and harp unites two of Australia's vibrant young soloists, Jonathan Henderson and Emily Granger, in a recital celebrating the rich heritage of Spain’s national dances and folk music.

Redolent with Spanish motifs, two robust miniatures by Ibert and Hasselmans beautifully evoke the flamenco guitar. Paris-dwelling composers Ravel and Chabrier yield elegant interpretations of the Habañera.

At the heart of this recital sits a deeply evocative rêverie – De Falla’s melancholic Nocturno, and Seven Spanish Folksongs, a cycle in strikingly diverse regional styles imbued with Hispanic flair.

Borne's Fantasie Brillante on Themes from Bizet’s Carmen spins the flute in virtuosic threads around a charming opera melody, with the infamous Habañera, Chanson Bohème and Toreador.

Kim Churchill 'Bright Night Sessions' Tour at Baroque Room Blue Mountains

The Bright Night Sessions are all about reconnecting with all of the phenomenal, regional music communities that Kim has had the pleasure of joining over the years in Australia.

Kim has partnered with Yamaha Australia and Undercover Creative to build a solar powered touring stage and production that can go into regional towns and communities that don’t have live music venues.

Kim says of the concept: “I think I’ve really come to a realisation about the way the Australian music scene lives and breathes through these communities and whilst playing larger headline shows in cities is still amazing and exciting, I really feel at home and deeply happy hitting small towns.

I want these shows to bring people together over the joy of some gentle music and connection with like-minded people. I’m envisioning loads of silly stories and long conversations about life and where we all are within it!"

Join them for an intimate Blue Mountains live performance from this wonderful down-to-earth artist as part of his ‘Bright Night Sessions’ tour.

Phoenix Choir Blue Mountains present two of Vivaldi’s best known choral works in a concert celebrating the great master composer of the Italian baroque. Musical director Rowen Fox conducts the choir and a professional string ensemble led by the accomplished Kanimbla Quartet. These works combine dramatic choral fanfares with intricate solo movements, including duets for two soprano soloists and guest oboe soloist.

Vivaldi’s Gloria is one of the most popular works in the choral repertoire, in which joyous choruses such as the opening Gloria and the uplifting Domine Fili unigenite contrast with the pained chromaticism of Et in terra pax hominibus, and the beautiful soprano solo with oboe obbligato, Domine Deus, Rex coelestis. This work pairs wonderfully with the finely wrought Magnificat to give a feast of Vivaldi’s choral music in a program which will also include other Italian works of the period sung a capella by the Phoenix Chamber Choir.
