Implicity - Exhibition of nature photographs by Ian Brown

Blue Mountains fine art nature photographer, Ian Brown, returns to the Garden with his latest collection of works. This exhibition blends the bold and subtle, to the simplicity of nature with the mysterious.
Closely observed in the making, the photographs reward contemplation. The subject may not be immediately obvious, but it is always something unusual found in nature and faithfully portrayed: events, phenomena, ephemera, details, rhythms, the familiar rendered unfamiliar, and strangeness celebrated.

Connections: Art and Collaboration

Focusing on renowned visual artists Bernard Ollis, Wendy Sharpe, Ann Smith and Ian Smith, this exhibition delves into the intriguing creative relationships essential to the production of collaborative work. The painter and the potter, the drafter and the printer, each artist bringing their individual skills to the table to produce works greater than the sum of the parts.

While the practical benefits of working together on complex artworks are obvious, the creative process of art making also lends itself to partnership. Working through the many demands of bringing an idea to realisation requires a resilient relationship in which elucidation, conciliation, stubbornness, and shared respect exists in equal measure. Often, this can result in firm, life-long friendships such as those of the four artists that are the focus of this exhibition. A Blue Mountains City Art Gallery exhibition

Drawing Kedumba is a collection of drawings, video and embroidery documenting the Kedumba River in Katoomba that stretches from the Gully to Katoomba Falls. The exhibition visually maps the landscape and reveals the struggle between historical and natural preservation, and over development.

The exhibition consists of over forty small drawings hung together to form a huge detailed visual map of the area. Video, photography, and embroidery provide smaller narrative encounters. The artworks consider some of the multi-layered complexities of biodiversity, Aboriginal displacement, colonisation, and current land management practices, as well as a solemn recognition of the area’s natural beauty.

Reel Rock 14 - Blue Mountains, presented by The North Face

Reel Rock 14 presented by The North Face is here!

The Reel Rock Film Tour, one of climbing's greatest celebrations, returns this November with a new collection of world premiere films.

In The High Road, the powerful and bold Nina Williams tests herself on some of the highest, most difficult boulder problems ever climbed. She is among the only women who climb elite-level problems that are 30, 40, even 50 feet tall - with no rope.

In United States of Joe’s climbers collide with a conservative coal mining community in rural Utah, to surprising results. When a ragged band of punk rock climbers shows up, the two cultures inevitably clash. After years of antagonism, they work with locals to build a more harmonious future.

And in The Nose Speed Record, legends Tommy Caldwell and Alex Honnold battle Yosemite dirtbags Jim Reynolds and Brad Gobright in a high stakes race for greatness. They competed for the coveted aped record on the 3,000-foot Nose of El Capitan, risking big falls to shave mere seconds off the fastest time.

Reel Rock visits 500 locations across the world this November. Don’t miss your local show!

The Crooked Fiddle Band Album Launch and Burralow in concert

The Crooked Fiddle Band return to Katoomba to launch their brand new album!

Another Subtle Atom Bomb takes the band’s blistering violin-led live show and creates soundtracks to their feelings around climate change.

From angsty and furious folk tunes to fantastical imagined worlds full of ecstatic hope, this is The Crooked Fiddle Band’s most personal album yet.

The band’s last show before an 18 month recording break was in Katoomba, so they can’t wait to return for a wild night to show you what they’ve been cooking up!

The Crooked Fiddle Band formed in 2006 through their mutual love of the energy and intensity of various traditional world music. Whilst writing and arranging, they discovered that this energy was shared by the other music they love: there seems to be a common thread between the frenetic accompaniment of gypsy, klezmer and punk rock; between the twisting rhythms of math-metal and balkan folk; between the clear tonalities of Scandinavian folk, Celtic folk, and cinematic post rock.

Adventure Entertainment is taking Finke: There and Back on the road, and rides full throttle to Mount Vic Flicks.

This is the Finke Desert Race and it is a religion.

For the riders, the spectators and the town of Alice Springs, the Finke Desert Race is more than a race. Scruff Hamill, who lives in a shed full of bikes in Sydney, makes the trip to tick off a bucket list event. Meanwhile, the factory race teams at the head of the field fight for pride and to be named ‘King of the Desert'.

Obsessed: Compelled to make

Obsessed: Compelled to make presents the work of 14 artists from across Australia, delving beyond the finished object, beyond the personality of the maker, into the fundamental conceptual framework of their creations. W

Charm of Finches Album launch tour with Breathing Underwater

Melbourne’s angelic sister folk duo, Charm of Finches, are touring their highly anticipated sophomore album: Your Company. They will be launching it at Pigeon Lane as part of their national album launch tour.

It has been three years since the duo released their highly praised 2016 debut album Staring at the Starry Ceiling. Your Company has been born of a time of turbulence. Following the death of Ivy’s best friend at the age of 14, the sisters’ songwriting turned towards the theme of grief, longing and the celebration of those left behind. This genre-defying album is lush with the sisters’ spacious string arrangements (cello and violin they play themselves), other worldly piano, a folky banjo and compelling ethereal vocal harmonies.

The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra with Le Hot Club de Katoomba

The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra are a collection of musicians, linked by common sonic journeys and familial ties. From ballads and sing-alongs to high-energy dance parties, they have spent years telling their stories with guitars and violins, with accordions and bass, with melodies and music makers gleaned from their wanderings.

The band is from a sparsely populated region of Canada’s West Coast. They travel community to community, bringing people together at halls on the Gulf Islands, barns in the prairies, kitchen parties in towns, clubs in the cities and festivals all summer long.

Their music weaves a multicultural Canadian tapestry: Roots, Eastern European Dance Party, Jazz, Bluegrass, Flamenco, African, Latin, Celtic, Métis, Rock, Gospel, Blues, Canadiana while the band represents an eclectic background – German Mennonite, Chinese, Dutch, Scottish and Métis. These troubadours remind you that this music could not exist without warm bodies in search of harmony.
